Dear Traveler,

Welcome on Sloveniaholidays.org!

The main intention of my website (blog Slovenia) is to give you first hand information about Slovenia and Slovenia holidays.

My first reason for making this site is because I believe many of you don’t know much about Slovenia simply because there aren’t enough sources from which you could learn about Slovenia. Slovenia has a lot to offer, but tourist agencies don’t do much to promote it and many people even in our neighboring countries don’t know where Slovenia is – for example, many people in southern Italy don’t know what is Slovenia (Italy borders on Slovenia). This is the reason for lack of tourist resources about Slovenia and the problem is that even tourists who decide to visit Slovenia may have problems when choosing sights worth to see in Slovenia, considering their wishes and interests.

My second reason for making this site is the fact that even one country is well tourist-developed, tourist guides for this country may not include some worth seeing spots that are not highly tourist-developed, because no one remembers to mention them in tourist guides. I didn’t read all tourist guides about Slovenia, but I have seen a lot of beautiful places in Slovenia and I want to present each one of them to you, so you can see them as well.

But when I’m writing my articles about Slovenia holidays I have one problem – I don’t know what you would like to know and the easiest solution is that you tell me what you are interested in. So, if you came on this webpage looking for an answer and you didn’t find one, please, send me an e-mail with your problem and I will try to help you.

Enjoy your trip!

This breath taking cave has taken more than 31 million visitors (That makes this cave the most visited cave in the history of mankind.) in the last 185 years or so. It was the first cave that was opened to the public, only the first part of the cave was opened in 1945 but it still is the longest accessible cave system in the world.

Its long cave system is the longest system known in Slovenia. The part that is open to the public is 20.570 m and visitors get to enjoy it by riding a train that is inside the cave which would also include a tour guide that will be giving you fantastic information about the history of the cave while you relax and admire the magnificent view inside. It has 20 km of amazing chambers and halls that will mesmerize you it is absolutely beautiful on the inside. It has 20 tunnels and its gazes are full of different colors and shapes, calcareous sinters and other works of nature that was built from thousands of years before. The sight of this cave pleased kings, queens, presidents of different countries and a lot of important and significant people from the past and up until now. It has been the apple of the eye of explorers and natural scientist. They are continuously using the cave to study our history and the science of the underworld. This cave is open to the public all year long. In addition to being able to visit the Postojna cave, visitors will also have a chance to join organized tourist?s visits that would lead to other beautiful caves of Postojna. To name a few there is the, Otok Cave, Black Cave, Planina Cave, Pivka Cave and the Cave that is under the Predjama Castle.

Ljubljana …
This place should be on your list, if you are going to go to Slovenia make sure that you include this place it is a must see and you sure won?t regret it. It is absolutely not Slovenia?s capital for nothing. They offer young people and tourists big parties and concerts of popular celebrities. It is a place where the fun just won?t stop! But even if it offers that much fun it is still considered as the sixth safest city in the world. During daytime it is very peaceful in Slovenia and the atmosphere is perfect for families and young people. The people of Ljubljana are also very hospitable and caring and that is another good reason to visit this part of Slovenia.

Bled <img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-378" title="Slovenia-Bled-Lake_Bled-hd" src="http://www.sloveniaholidays.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Slovenia-Bled-Lake_Bled-hd-300x200.jpg" alt="Slovenia"width="300" height="200" />…
It is called the paradise on Earth. It is also very well known because of its lake that goes after its name, Lake Bled. It is the main attraction. It?s possible to swim in it from summer time up until September. There is a beautiful and small island at the middle of the lake and that is why they call it heaven? Because when you are there you have this beautiful view of the clean and lake all around you. I should tell you about the price though, it is also similar to the heights of heaven and it is worth every penny of it.

Postojna cave …
This is the second greatest tourist attraction in Slovenia, it is said that the first one belongs to Bled. It lives through its name, the caves here are magnificent. It gives home to the endemic olm, or the largest troglodytic amphibian in the world? In Slovenian?s language its English translation is the human fish. Inside the cave you would be able to ride on a train and the train will take you for a ride inside the cave, so that you can just sit down and relax while you enjoy the cave?s amazing view and at the same time you can listen to the tour guide who would satisfy you with amazing information and stories about the cave.

Yesterday evening I was walking in Ljubljana and I got an idea. Ljubljana is fully decorated since the beginning of December and I?m sure you want to know how it looks like. Some of you may be visiting Ljubljana in December, maybe even for Christmas or New Year. That encouraged me to take some pictures while I was walking and present those pictures to you.

<img src="http://www.sloveniaholidays.org/wp-content/uploads/3fa28feeaca74b7.jpg" border="0" alt="Slovenia holidays"width="380" height="284" />

I started my ?trip? in the Čopova Street ? the main street in the center of Ljubljana. As you can see there are a lot of local people doing holiday errands, but I have also noticed quite many tourists taking pictures of Ljubljana (like me). Then I was walking along Čopova Street and came on the Prešeren square.

We could say Prešeren square is the main square in Ljubljana and is therefore the most decorated one. At weekend, different music groups have (free) concerts on Prešeren square. I continued my way across Tromostovje (Three bridges) ?

? and saw something new.

I can?t think of an appropriate translation, but I would say these are small wooden houses. In those houses merchants are selling everything you can imagine and even more. Then I went to see the city hall and I noticed a big Christmas tree in front of it.

I finished my walk at one of the promenades along Ljubljanica. I noticed that Ljubljana castle changes color from red to blue and green.

At many points on my way it was possible to buy hot tea, mulled wine (highly recommended), chestnut (be careful buying that because it might be old ? the main chestnut season is over), almonds, candies and many other things. If you don?t want to waste your money, I suggest buying only mulled wine ? Slovenia is wine-producing country and all wine offered in the streets is home made (and not some cheap Macedonian imported wine).

Weather in Slovenia is not as simple as you might think considering the fact that Slovenia isn?t a big country. That is why I?m going to inform you about some aspects of weather that might help you while traveling.

First of all, mostly because of landscape variety, weather is different in different landscapes of Slovenia, which means that seaside has different climate than only 30 km distant Karst. And of course, Karst has different climate that 60 km distant Ljubljana. And so on. So I will describe each climate separately.

Mediterranean climate in the West

Mediterranean climate is typical of Primorska region, the region including the seaside and practically all the western part of Slovenia. It has very hot summers and mild winters. The main problem of this climate is a short-term but very strong wind called ?burja?, blowing up to 100 km/h. It can blow all over the year, but most commonly blows in winter (so don?t worry if you are planning Slovenia holidays in summer). Snow isn?t very common in areas with Mediterranean climate (especially not at the seaside).

Continental climate in central and eastern Slovenia

Typical of continental climate are hot summers and cold winters. Because of proximity to mountains, central Slovenia has much more rainfall than eastern Slovenia (1300 mm in Ljubljana vs. 800 mm in Murska Sobota). Most precipitation falls in spring and autumn. In wintertime snow is common. In summers rain showers can surprise you in the afternoon. Unfortunately, hail is getting more and more common.

Severe alpine climate in mountain regions

In Slovenian mountains weather can cause you many problems. Typical of alpine climate in Slovenia are very cold winters and cool summers. A lot of snow falls in winter, and in some areas snow remains until the next winter. Despite climate changes, Slovenia still has its own glacier. In summer, rain is frequent and can be quite strong.

Conclusion

When planning your Slovenia holidays it is very important to look the weather forecast and select suitable clothes, appropriate for the area you are planning to visit. Although Slovenia isn?t like England (it doesn?t rain all the time), umbrella might be useful because when it rains it usually rains heavily. Because of the wind, wind jacket can also be useful. Do not forget to take your hiking shoes if you are planning to visit Slovenian mountains, because the rain there is more frequent and paths can be slippery.

Slovenia is definitely not an urbanized country. Majority of Slovenian territory is rural and therefore especially appropriate for hiking and cycling. But that isn?t all. Thanks to many Slovenian rivers, Slovenia is also famous for canoeing (rapids are present in majority of rivers in Slovenia, such as Kolpa, Sava, Krka, ?).

If you don?t like hotels, apartments and other similar kinds of accommodation in the cities, I recommend staying during your Slovenia holidays in one of two hundred Slovenian tourist farms. Tourist farms are normal farms with extra space for accommodation. They usually offer many things that hotels don?t ? for example traditional Slovenian food and wine. People running this farms are also very friendly and helpful. All this is available at low prices (usually lower than city accommodation). If you would like to get sight of Slovenian countryside while enjoying Slovenia holidays, tourist farms are definitely the right option. It is also a great opportunity to meet some local people ? don?t worry, most people, especially young, even in countryside speaks English.

The other thing you might be interested in is trips to the mountains. Owing to variety of Slovenian landscapes, you can choose how high mountains you want. There are three different mountain ranges in Slovenia: Julian Alps, Dinaric Alps and Kamnik-Savinja Alps. Julian Alps are generally higher and more pretentious for hikers.

Watching beauty of Slovenian countryside from perspective of bicyclist is an unforgettable experience. I can?t tell you the best route to go to, because there are too many. I can on only tell you one fact ? cycling in Slovenia isn?t as easy as for example in Netherlands. Slovenian landscapes are hilly and from this perspective unfriendly to bikers. But, if you take that in consideration, you will enjoy.

Doesn?t matter where you are headed to, Slovenian countryside also has many great but still low budget restaurants, offering several kinds of food. If you decide for a meal in one of them, don?t forget to ask for original Slovenian wine. Contentment guaranteed!

Pohorje is one of the most attractive destinations in Slovenia. On south-west side, the main attraction is Zreško Pohorje with Rogla, and on east side Mariborsko Pohorje with Areh and Bolfenk.

Rogla is also one of the highest mountains in Pohorje, which generally reaches height from about 1000 to 1600 meters. Rogla is 1517 meters high, and after it is also named a touristic town.

The touristic town is in a process of construction for about 30 years, and there is something new added every year. Currently, they are building new family hotel, and before there were built hotels of different rankings, bungalows and apartments. In the immediate vicinity there are also more and more touristic farms. Also Zreče, smaller town at the foothill, through which leads an asphalted road to Rogla, offers many possibilities of accommodation. There is regular bus line, which starts in Slovenske Konjice.

<img class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-287" title="rogla-izlet" src="http://www.sloveniaholidays.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/rogla-izlet-1024x768.jpg" alt="Pohorje"width="491" height="368" />

Zreče is generally very popular destination, since there is a great spa resort and wellness offer in recognized hotels. It offers a lot of possibilities for daily walks around viticulture areas, and some visits of local attractions.

Rogla itself is not very rich in wellness offer, but it has more possibilities for recreation. There are many organized paths, which enable hiking, Nordic walking and mountain biking around 50 kilometers long area of Pohorje. In the immediate vicinity of the hotels there is also a lookout tower.

Walks are also popular in winter months, as well as skiing, cross-country, sledding, boarding, snowmobile driving and many other activities. There are 10 skiing trails of different lengths and levels of difficulty in Rogla. Beside ski trails there are also chairlifts, which take skiers back to the top in no time. Also tracks for cross-country skiing are well organized. They are together long almost 30 kilometers.

At the high altitude, good athletes like to prepare themselves for hard following seasons. So in Rogla, there are outdoor and indoor sports fields (basketball, football, volleyball?), and also adrenaline sled track next to them.

You can come in Rogla also on foot from almost any direction, but most of the guests come by car, motorbike, bicycle or bus. There are more than 1000 parking spots, so there won?t be any troubles looking for a parking spot, even for the daily visitors, who come only for a walk or skiing in the winter, as well as for those, who want to spend relaxing or active vacations here.

I?m writing this article for people who don?t know much about Slovenia and are still deciding whether they should go to Slovenia. My suggestion is that you should go and I?m going to reason that with some facts speaking in favor of Slovenia.

1.) Location

Slovenia is a country in central Europe, bordering Italy to the west, the Adriatic Sea to the southwest, Croatia to the south and east, Hungary to the northeast and Austria to the north. But, in order to get a real idea where Slovenia is I’ve marked it on the map of Europe.

<img src="http://www.sloveniaholidays.org/wp-content/uploads/c4cad63f16fbc3c.jpg" border="0" alt="Slovenia"width="432" height="323" />

2.) Political aspect

The Republic of Slovenia has been an independent democratic republic since 1991, when Slovenia seceded from Yugoslavia. Unlike Serbia, Montenegro, Croatia and Bosnia, war in Slovenia only lasted for ten days (Yes, I said days not years:) and claimed nineteen victims (on Slovenian side). Slovenia has been a full member of European Union since 1.5.2004. One of Slovenia?s achievement is last few years is also Slovenian presidency of the EU council in the first half of the year 2008.

3.) Currency

When Slovenia was a part of Yugoslavia, our national currency was ?Dinar?. Together with the independence we changed our currency ? we were using ?Slovenian Tolar?. But, when we joined European Union, our goal was to also join Monetary Union as soon as possible. As first country, which joined EU in 2004, we achieved our goal on 1.1.2007, when our currency became Euro (?). Now our national currency is Euro, which is a great advantage for you, because you won?t have to switch currencies all the time.

4.) Economy

When Yugoslavia was falling apart, Slovenia was lucky from two perspectives. Firstly, war in Slovenia only lasted for 10 days, which means, if we ignore other facts, that Slovenia started its transition (from socialism to capitalism) without delay, which occurred in other Yugoslavia countries (because they were in war). The consequence is that Slovenia has already completed the transition and therefore our economy is more stable than economy of other former Yugoslavia countries.

Secondly, we were lucky because even in Yugoslavia, Slovenia was the most developed part of the country. However, Slovenia had quite many problems when we became independent, because our economy lost a big market for our products ? all other Yugoslavian countries. That caused a smaller economy crisis in 1992/93, but the economy has recovered quickly, because we focused on the market of European Union. Of course, former Yugoslavian markets are still very important for our economy.

5.) Safety

Slovenia is a small country with little political influence on mayor countries. Therefore Slovenia remains free of terrorist incidents. Overall crime rate in Slovenia is low, but, like in any other country, it can happen (if you are unlucky). I still suggest normal preventive measures, such as locking your car (which I consider normal) and use of ?secure wallet? (under shirt wallet).
